“The Mazanec name has been known in the business community in the Greater Waco area since the early 1900s. Mazanec Construction has been known throughout Central Texas for almost five decades. The company was founded in 1969 by Ed Mazanec Jr. and later incorporated in 1981. Now in it’s 49th year, Mazanec Construction is owned and operated by second and third-generation family members.
At the company’s inception the primary market was pre-engineered metal buildings and some occasional retail projects. In order to support growth of the company over the years the market focus shifted to educational/institutional and office projects as well as the occasional healthcare facility.
In the early 2000’s, the primary growth sector in Central Texas was in the realm of public education facilities and Mazanec Construction saw an opportunity to grow the organization to support more projects and an overall larger volume of work. During the past 15-20 years Mazanec has seen its average project size and overall volume of work quadruple. As the volume of work has increased, so has Mazanec’s company infrastructure to support this growth. Now in its 49th year, Mazanec Construction is cemented as the largest, continually operating, construction firm in Waco, TX.”

Ed Mazanec Jr. founded Mazanec Construction in 1969 after working in the building construction industry 20 years. Ed’s prior experience as a general superintendent on projects such as the 10 story condominium at Lake Air and Cobbs, as well as the first three buildings at McLennan Community College set the stage for beginning his own company. ( MCC Administration Building, Library, and Fine Arts)
The McLennan County Farm Bureau building on Hwy 6 was the first contract completed by Mazanec Construction, followed by a much larger 2 story Medical Arts Clinic in Corsicana in 1972. Due to the success of completing the MAC on time and in budget, and good business relationships with the doctors; several other construction contracts in the Corsicana area followed.
As with many upstart companies, the family business operated from their residence with Anita Mazanec assisting with bookkeeping and documents. Ed and Anita continued contracting through the next several years as young Ed Mazanec III attended Texas A&M pursuing a degree in civil engineering. Ed III worked several part time jobs in construction during the summer months in Waco and later in College Station. This introduction to the commercial building process along with the acquired engineering knowledge created a strong passion for building construction.
Upon graduation in May 1978, Ed III followed in his father’s path and joined Mazanec Construction. With rising oil prices in 1979, the US economy suffered a severe recession which lasted several years. During this time, construction projects were few in numbers and layoffs were common in the industry. Despite this, a Stran Steel Products dealership/distributorship was signed in October of 1979 allowing Mazanec Construction to expand its operation into the Steel Building Industry. This proved beneficial during these recessionary times as many new businesses desired the cost savings offered with pre-engineered steel. In the same year, Mazanec Construction joined the Central Texas Chapter Association of General Contractors which recognizes only quality and skilled contractors that exhibit integrity.
1980 began with a contract award from Fleetwood Enterprises to construct a new 80,000 sf manufacturing plant for Terry Travel Trailers on Imperial Drive, at a cost over a million dollars. This was the first Stran Steel pre-engineered building project for Mazanec Construction which catapulted the company to many subsequent projects with Fleetwood Homes over the next 25 years. At the same time, TYMCO expanded their manufacturing facility and the relationship with the Young family proved invaluable with numerous projects completed in manufacturing, retail, industrial, and religious facilities from 1979 to present day.
With the company expanding, a new office location was needed and subsequently the company moved to its current location at 1508 New Dallas Highway in 1981. The business continued to grow with Mark Mazanec completing his associate degree in Building Construction from TSTC in 1983 and immediately joining the family business. With Mark on board, Ed III took on the estimating and project management responsibilities since Mark’s strong point was field supervision. Ed Jr. continued his tutelage of his sons in managing a construction company from start to finish with the adage “you can build a monument or build a tombstone” describing a building process that can reward owners or put them out of business.
The decade of the 90’s was an era of significant growth in the Waco community and with that growth Mazanec Construction provided construction services in a variety of arenas. While new manufacturing and office space was in demand, the company’s repeat clients were at the core of its values. Investing in quality employees and expanding benefits to hourly workers, maintained employee loyalty and provided experienced, trained, craftworkers to customers. Not only was the company continually investing in heavy equipment, Mazanec Construction was the first construction company in the central Texas area to invest in computers for job costing and accounting. The company continues to be on the forefront of new technology available to contractors by implementation of clash detection programs, cloud based project management software, and robotics in building layout.
The steady growth of Mazanec Construction is due to experienced and dedicated employees which many of have been employed over 25 years; as well as the large number of repeat customers over the past 50 years!
